Miao-fen Tseng, the Inaugural Director of the Institute of World Languages and Associate Professor of Chinese, has been awarded the federal STARTALK funding at the total amount of approximately $1,000,000 since 2008. The 2016 Virginia STARTALK Chinese Teacher Academy (VSCTA) in conjunction with the Virginia STARTALK Chinese Student Academy (VSCSA) marks its historical juncture to transition from blended learning to online learning. Both programs have established a national reputation for academic rigor and quality instruction in the US.

In Spring 2015, the IWL offered its initial Faculty Grants for Development and Travel.  This Round Table session showcased the funded projects for both Spring and Fall 2015 and gave recipients the opportunity to share their work in a conference-like poster session. Their projects were varied and covered topics from E- portfolio development to research on pronunciation strategies. We also hope that these successful projects inspired others to apply for the next round of grants (due Feb. 15).

The Institute of World Languages has newly established the scholarship to support undergraduate students who have demonstrated a sincere devotion to their language education, as well as a deeper interest in, and commitment to the learning of any world language taught at UVa.This scholarship is to support an excellent undergraduate student who had exhibited, as part of his or her language education at the University of Virginia, an extraordinary ability to rapidly acquire foreign languages in an immersion-like learning environment.

Professors at Faculty Retreat

We would like to announce a very successful inaugural Faculty Retreat, "Assessment Design for Performance" on May 5, 2015! Dr. Jennifer Eddy's workshop was extremely generative for many of our participants and encouraged our faculty members to engage more deeply with questions about assessment and lesson plan design. Our Feedback Surveys reflected the success of this retreat and many of the faculty in attendance expressed their desire for IWL to continue hosting faculty retreats in the future.
