Talk #1

Time/Date: 3:30-5PM, Thursday, September 12

Speaker: Frederick Poole, Michigan State University

Title: Developing AI Literacy in the World Language Classroom

Abstract: The release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November of 2022 ushered in a wave of new technologies that leverage generative AI. Much like the introduction of the internet in the 1990’s, and the App around the 2010’s, generative AI will introduce a new repertoire of tools that language teachers will be expected to integrate into their practices.  To do this, world language educators will need to develop AI literacies which involve both technical skills around using these tools and a new set of behaviors and practices that leverage the affordances that these tools offer.  This talk will first put forth a framework for thinking about AI literacy that is supported with multiple examples. The second half of this presentation will focus on classroom-ready activities and tasks that promote AI literacies.
