English
Cherokee Language at UVA
The Cherokee language has been spoken for hundreds, if not thousands, of years in western North Carolina by Cherokees as well as their neighbors and friends. This course is one of many efforts to revitalize, maintain, and support the Cherokee language by introducing students to Cherokee language and culture. Students will begin to learn to speak and write the Cherokee language, learning the essentials of Cherokee phonetics, word construction, and basic greetings. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in Cherokee and an understanding of the language’s cultural and historical significance, as well as strategies for continuing their study at the intermediate level.
