Faculty Development Grant
These grants support faculty development in areas of world language instruction or second language acquisition, in any language. Possible projects include: certification in language assessment (such as OPI training); travel to conferences to present a paper or to participate in workshops; or creation of course materials that are pedagogically and technologically innovative.
Five faculty members won the Faculty Development Grant in 2015:
- Jung Hee Kim (Korean) - conference travel
- Choi Yoon Hwa (Korean) - conference travel
- Paula Sprague (Spanish) - conference travel
- Janay Crabtree (ESL) - conference travel
Shu-chen Chen (Chinese) was also awarded the Faculty Development Grant for a course development project. Professor Chen's project, "Building Proficiency through Use of Performance Based Videos in AAPPL Format," is intended to develop ways to incorporate digital learning into the language classroom.
Faculty Research Grant
The IWL Faculty Research Grant will support scholarship and research to improve foreign/second language instruction and second language acquisition. The research project may fall into the categories of action research or empirical research.
Carrie Bramlet (Spanish) won this year's Faculty Research Grant. Professor Bramlet's project, "Motivation and Competition in the Foreign Language Classroom," will study the effects of such motivations on learning in the language classroom and use her findings to help better develop courses at UVa.
