Language Commons Activity Award

The Institute of World Languages has partnered with the Language Commons Activity Award to support language learning and intercultural communication activities in the College of Arts & Sciences.

UVA language faculty and student organizations may apply for a Language Commons Activity Award to promote language learning and intercultural communication outside of classroom contexts.

This award (up to $500) supports activities that promote language learning, intercultural exchange, and active inclusion of diverse and global perspectives.

Activity Awards for Language Instructors

Activities supported by this award should engage students in meaningful language use outside the classroom context. We encourage activities that are intentionally inclusive of diverse student interests and language levels, connect students to target language communities, and/or engage students in hands-on activities in which they utilize language skills.

Guidelines:

  • All language instructors (including graduate teaching assistants) are encouraged to apply.

  • Grants support activity expenses of up to $500. Funds may be used toward activity costs (equipment/supplies purchase or rental, some catering expenses, speaker fees, etc) but may not be used for wages or faculty travel.

  • Language programs and instructors are welcome to work with LC staff, colleagues, student organizations, and community members to develop their plans.

  • The Language Commons will provide space in the LC, Alcove, or Language Lab for activities.

  • A limited number of grants are available. First-time applicants will be prioritized.

  • Receipts will be required for reimbursements.

Timeline:

  • Requests are considered on a rolling basis.

  • Funds will be awarded as research funds.

  • All funds must be used, and expense reports submitted via Workday, by May 15th.
