Korean at UVa
The Korean program at UVA offers courses at various levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced, and fourth-year Korean (KOR 401 & 402). From Elementary Korean (KOR 101 & 102) through Intermediate Korean (KOR 201 & 202), all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) are equally emphasized. Advanced courses (KOR 300 and 400) also incorporate all these four skills, with an emphasis in structured reading and writing skills.
In keeping with the departmental goal, the Korean program strives to help students become independent life-long learners and function effectively in the real world, providing a communicative and student-centered learning environment. In addition, students are strongly encouraged to maximize their experience of learning Korean beyond classroom settings, such as living in Shea House where students can immerse themselves in the language on a daily basis.
Why study Korean?
For the past 20 years or so, South Korea has emerged as one of the strongest countries in East Asia in several aspects. Its economy has grown to become a very important trade partner of the US. Also, due to a rapid development in its technology industry as well as electronics, South Korea now is one of the few dominant manufacturers that compete at a global market. South Korea has also been a strategically important ally for the US for more than half a century.
Though a small country, South Korea has 5000 years of history and has maintained a rich culture of its own throughout its long history, which boosts various literary traditions and a scientifically invented language, Hangul, among other things. Learning Korean will lead you to a vibrant culture, an enduring history, and colorful traditions of literature, artistry, and cuisine. Through learning Korean and the culture, you will be equipped with a skill that will be invaluable in competing in a job market. Also, it will give you an opportunity to explore an ever-growing popularity of Korean culture (Hallyu), such as Korean dramas and pop music, which has taken the world by the storm in recent years.

버지니아 대학교에서 배우는 한국어는?
재미있는 한국어! 배우고 싶은 한국어!
버지니아 대학교의 한국어 프로그램은 학습자의 실력에 따라 초급, 중급, 중상급, 고급으로 나누어 제공한다. 초급 과목 (한국어 101, 102, 106)과 중급 과목(한국어 201, 202) 은 기본적인 언어 수행의 요소인 듣기, 읽기, 말하기, 쓰기 등의4가지 언어 능력을 골고루 학습한다. 중상급과 고급 한국어 과목(한국어 300, 400)은 앞서 제시한 4가지 기본적인 언어 학습을 기본으로 유지하면서 독해와 작문의 학습 능력을 강화하는 수업이다.
동아시아학과의 교육 목표와 부합하기 위해, 버지니아 대학교 한국어 프로그램은 학생들의 의사소통 능력과 학습자 중심의 교육 환경을 마련해 줌과 동시에 자기 주도적인 평생 학습 능력과과 현실 세계에서 효과적으로 대응해 나갈 수 있는 능력을 배양할 수 있도록 끈임 없이 노력하고 있다. 그리고 학생들에게 한국어 수업시간 외에도 일상 생활을 하면서 직접 한국어를 배울 수 있는 언어 몰입 경험을 최대화하기 위해 쉐아 하우스(외국어 학습자 전용 기숙사) 기숙사 생활 등을 독려한다.

최근 20여년 간 대한민국은 여러 방면에서 동아시아 국가들 중 영향력 있는 나라의 하나로 성장해 왔다. 한국의 경제 성장은 미국의 중요한 무역 상대로 그 위상이 날로 높아지고 있으며 특히 전자 산업과 첨단 기술 분야의 빠르고 눈부신 발전은 국제 시장에서 제조 업체 점유율을 우세한 위치로 끌어올리기도 했다. 지난 반세기 동안 한국은 미국의 전략적 우방국으로 양국 관계는 견고해지고 있다.
한국은 규모가 작은 나라임에도 불구하고 5000년의 역사와 더불어 계승된 풍부한 문화를 근간으로 다양한 문학의 전통을 확립하고 과학적 언어인 한글을 발명해 냈다. 한국어를 배우는 것은 생동감 넘치는 문화, 역동적인 역사, 그리고 다채로운 문학, 예술, 음식문화의 전통의 세계로 인도할 것이다.한국어와 한국 문화를 배우는 것은 미래의 경쟁구도의 취업 시장에서 또하나의 귀중한 실력을 구비하는데 큰 도움이 될 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 한국어를 배우는 것으로 드라마와 케이팝 등을 통해 세계 각국으로 폭발적으로 퍼지는 한류 열풍을 직접 체험할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 될 것이다.
