Title: Moving forward by taking a step back: equitable course design and inclusive practices for post-secondary world language education
Abstract
In this talk on creating accessible and inclusive language teaching, Dr. Caitlin Cornell will focus particularly on designing courses equitably and implementing inclusive teaching practices broadly construed as (a) macro, early planning decisions and (b) micro, acute daily implementations and support mechanisms. Many inclusive practices can be applied to educational contexts generally; in this talk, participants will examine inclusive practices through the unique context of post-secondary world language learning and teaching. Participants will also explore what it takes to achieve a purposeful balance of best practices in world language pedagogy while pursuing equitable support for students.
Bio
At Michigan State University, Caitlin Cornell (Ph.D. Michigan State University) is Assistant Director of the Center for Language Teaching Advancement and the Accessibility Coordinator and Advocate for the College of Arts and Letters. In these roles, Dr. Cornell researches and teaches about accessible and disability inclusive additional language education, collaborates with language education organizations nationwide, supports faculty in accessible pedagogy, and advocates for disabled students, faculty, and staff in educational contexts.
