Spring 2026 Faculty Retreat:The Future of Languages

10:00 – 10:10 AM — Opening Remarks, Associate Dean Willis Jenkins  

10:10 – 11:10 AM — Keynote & Q&A: "Reimagining Language Study," Dr. Deb Reisinger (Duke University)   

Description: The keynote situates Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum (CLAC) within broader conversations about the future of language study in higher education. Rather than presenting CLAC as a single solution, the talk frames it as part of a growing ecosystem of content-based approaches that emphasize transferable skills, disciplinary thinking, and real-world application.  

11:10-11:30 AM — Remarks on Languages across the Curriculum Pilot Program at UVA, "Progress and Possibilities," Dr. Liz Hall (Institute of World Languages)  

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM — Interactive Workshop: "Performing Language & Culture: Teaching & Learning as Critical Embodied Encounters," Dr. Anna Santucci (Center for Teaching Excellence)   

Drawing on her research integrating performing arts into language and culture pedagogy, Dr. Santucci will lead participants through activities inspired by applied theatre and improv. The session explores how embodied learning and inclusive teaching practices can foster trust, agency, and connection in the classroom. Participants will experiment with activities, reflect on the experience, and discuss adaptations for their own courses.  

12:30 – 1:30 PM — Lunch  

1:30 – 3:15 PM — Discussion Tables (three 35-minute rounds)   

Three themed tables running in parallel. Participants choose a table for each round and may switch at transitions. Table 1: Enrollment & Retention Table 2: AI & World Language Pedagogy Table 3: Dream Big — Keep, Change, Eliminate  

3:15 – 3:35 PM — Gallery Walk  

3:35 – 3:45 PM — Full Group Reflection  

3:45 – 4:00 PM — Distinguished Undergraduate Awards & Closing Remarks
