Our Mission

The University of Virginia's Institute of World Languages is an initiative of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Institute brings languages and cultures of the world to the forefront of our educational mission and promotes innovative collaboration for research, instruction and outreach activities across departments and disciplines. The Institute’s mission is to:

  • Prepare students to be linguistically proficient, culturally competent, and thoughtful global citizens.

  • Strengthen research and collaboration across language programs and interdisciplinary areas through programmatic, departmental, and institutional initiatives that will further develop world language literacy.

  • Foster the exchange of ideas and innovations for language learners and educators in the international language community at UVA and beyond.

  • Organize activities promoting world language literacy and second language acquisition that support the professional development of prospective and current language educators.
