Keynote Speech - How We Learn and Why ePortfolios Are Essential in Higher Education

Why is there so much interest in ePortfolios across higher education today? The reasons are actually quite compelling and often grounded in what we know about learning. This keynote presentation will explore answers to this overarching question by first considering what we empirically know about human cognition and how people learn. From this foundation, we will consider the practices and pedagogies that employ ePortfolios and connect those practices to what we know about learning. We will also explore the range of ways in which ePortfolios are being using in higher education, including teaching and learning, assessment, advising, and career development. Example ePortfolios from each area will be shared. The keynote will conclude with a brief summary of the most recent findings from the ePortfolio scholarship and recommendations will be provided regarding how that information should inform future ePortfolio practices.

Dr. Eddie Watson is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Georgia where he leads university efforts associated with faculty development, TA development, learning technologies, media and production services, classroom support and learning spaces, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Possessing a Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Technology from Virginia Tech, he also teaches courses on College Teaching and is a Fellow in the Institute for Higher Education. He is the Executive Editor of the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the founding Executive Editor of the International Journal of ePortfolio. He is also vice-chair of the board for the Association of Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-based Learning. He was also recently quoted in the New York Times, CNN, NPR, Campus Technology, and University Business Magazine regarding current teaching and learning issues in higher education. He is currently working with Jose Bowen to author a follow up to Teaching Naked, which will be published by Wiley later this year. Faculty Sessions
Faculty from foreign language departments at UVA will share their experiences using e-portfolios to support the development of language mastery, communicative competence, and cultural competence in beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of foreign language learning. They will share best practices and a suite of e-portfolio materials as they lead participants in a lively discussion of the practical considerations of e-portfolio adoption for their own courses as well as hands-on demonstrations of the WordPress and Digication tools used in our programs. This work has been supported through two Learning Technology Incubator grants (2014-2016) and includes faculty from Chinese, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
