Title:  Pursuing Language Mastery: Balancing Autonomy and Rigor

Should world language classrooms prioritize only language acquisition, or should they also focus on promoting student autonomy? What does success look like in language education, and do current grading systems effectively measure it, given the time-intensive nature of learning a language? As requests for SDAC accommodations increase and student learning norms evolve, educators face the challenge of balancing kindness with rigor and equitable practices with efficiency. In this session, participants will engage in a discuss while the presenter shares insights from her Japanese classes, exploring the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
