ChatGPT and Generative AI for the Institute of World Languages (IWL)

We have three events on three separate dates. All events will be the same. Please choose the one that is most convenient for you. Registration is required. Lunch is provided.

Generative AI such as ChatGPT is the latest major technological shift to affect higher education. In this conversation we will pose questions and discuss topics specific to language learning. We welcome those who are familiar with these technologies as well as those who are curious (and/or suspicious!)

To get the conversation started, we asked ChatGPT to articulate its use in this context, and it responded thusly:

"Generative AI, exemplified by models like ChatGPT, will have profound implications for language learning in the future. These advanced models can produce human-like text, enabling learners to practice conversational skills, receive instant feedback, and access tailored exercises at any time. Unlike traditional methods that might rely on rote memorization or static textbooks, the dynamic nature of generative AI provides adaptive learning experiences. It can simulate real-life conversations, present diverse linguistic challenges, and adjust its complexity based on the learner's proficiency level. Consequently, language learning can become more engaging, accessible, and personalized, potentially accelerating fluency and bridging communication gaps on a global scale."

How might we (humans) respond?
